Application for Licensing in California

ALL APPLICANTS MUST PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING:


1. Appropriate Fees.


2. Completed Application for Licensure by Examination.


3. Completed fingerprints using either the Live Scan Process or the Applicant Fingerprint Card (Hard Card) processing method as directed in the INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING FINGERPRINT CARDS. Submit the appropriate nonrefundable TOTAL FEE as directed on the Application Fee Schedule.


4. One recent 2" x 2" passport-type photograph.


5. Completed Request for Accommodation of Disabilities form(s), if applicable.


6. Request for Transcript form(s) completed and forwarded directly from the nursing school(s) with certified transcripts.


7. If applicable, documents and/or letters explaining prior convictions or disciplinary action and attesting to your rehabilitation as directed in Section II of the General Information and Instructions.


IN ADDITION FOR INTERNATIONAL GRADUATES:


A. Send Breakdown of Educational Program for International Nursing Programs form to your school with the Request for Transcript form. Also provide the Certified English Translation form to your certified translator if your transcript is not in English.

B. Submit a copy of your license or diploma that allows you to practice professional nursing in the country where you were educated. If you do not hold a license, a written explanation is required. Also, provide copies of your certificates for midwifery and psychiatric nursing, if applicable.

How Can you Practice as an RN in California

To practice as an RN in California, you must be licensed by the California State Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). You must meet educational requirements, pass a criminal background check, and pass the national licensing examination. To apply for licensure:

- Get an application package and detailed instructions online at the BRN website or by contacting the BRN.

- Send your application to the BRN at least 6-8 weeks before graduation.

- Have your school send the BRN your transcripts.

- Complete a fingerprint background check.

- Apply for an Interim Permit if you wish to work in a supervised nursing capacity while awaiting your application process.

- Take and pass the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX). The exam is computerized and given continuously 6 days a week. (New graduates are advised to take the exam soon after graduation because research has shown that there is a higher success rate for early test takers compared with those who wait several months.)

NCLEX Examination Fee

The fee for taking the NCLEX® examination is $200.

You may also have to pay other fees for licensure required by
the board of nursing in the jurisdiction in which you are
applying. You must check with your board of nursing to find
out about these fees. If you choose to schedule your NCLEX
examination at a test center outside of the United States*,
you will have to pay a scheduling fee of $150 plus a Value
Added Tax (VAT) where applicable. These fees will be
charged when you schedule your examination appointment.

Registration Process Preview for NCLEX

1. Submit an application for licensure to the board of nursing where you wish to be licensed.

2. Meet all of the board of nursing’s eligibility requirements to take the NCLEX examination.

3. Register for the NCLEX Examination with Pearson VUE.

4. Receive Confirmation of Registration from Pearson VUE.

5. The board of nursing makes the candidate eligible to take the NCLEX.

6. Receive Authorization to Test (ATT) from Pearson VUE.

If you choose to provide an e-mail address at the time you register for the NCLEX examination (whether by mail, telephone, or via the internet), please note that all of your correspondence from Pearson VUE will arrive ONLY by e-mail. If you do not provide an e-mail address when you register, your correspondence from Pearson VUE will arrive ONLY through U.S. mail.
If more than two weeks have passed after you have submitted a registration for an NCLEX examination and received confirmation from Pearson VUE, and you have not received an ATT, please call Pearson VUE at the appropriate number listed on the inside front cover.

Registration Time Limit


All NCLEX examination registrations will remain open for a 365-day time period during which a board of nursing may determine the candidate’s eligibility. The time period
begins when the board of nursing receives the candidate’s registration from the test service. Once a candidate is made eligible, he or she must test within the validity dates printed on the Authorization to Test (ATT).
